Getting started
Add the printer URL on a computer
Set up Sealed Print as a network printer on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, without installing a driver.
Every source has personal printer URLs. You add one of them once as a network printer, and from then on you print from any program as usual. The operating systems use their built-in IPP support (IPP Everywhere), so you do not install a driver or any other software on the computer you print from.
Prerequisites
- A source in Sealed Print (Sources → New source). Every member can create their own sources.
- The inbound channel Printer URL (IPP) is on. It is on by default; admins find it under Settings → Inbound channels.
- Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later, Linux with CUPS 2.2 or later, or a Chromebook.
- On phones and tablets, printer URLs cannot be added. Use the web upload or sharing there.
Which URL to choose
The source shows several printer URLs:
| URL | Where the job goes |
|---|---|
Default routing (…/ipp/print/<token>) |
To the default destination of the person printing, or into the queue to wait for a destination. See Default destinations. |
One per destination (…/ipp/print/<token>/<identifier>) |
Always to this destination. The print dialog offers exactly the options this printer has. |
| One per destination group, marked "(group)" (Team plan) | To every destination of the group. See Destination groups. |
| One per workflow, for example Hold in Sealed Print | The job waits in Sealed Print until someone continues it. See Hold and workflows. |
You can add several URLs on the same computer; each becomes its own printer. With the Team plan, Combine several destinations builds a URL that prints to several destinations at once.
The printer URL is a key. Anyone who knows it can print into your queue. Do not share it. If it was passed on by mistake, choose Generate new token in the menu of the source: all old URLs stop working immediately.
One-time setup
In the web app, open Sources, select Set up on a computer on the source and copy the URL with the copy button. The same steps are shown there with your real addresses filled in.
Windows 10 and 11
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device. On Windows 10: Devices → Printers & scanners → Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait a moment until "The printer that I want isn't listed" appears, then select Add manually.
- Choose Select a shared printer by name and paste the printer URL.
- Confirm with Next. Windows uses the name "Sealed Print" and sets up the printer.
- Optionally choose your own name and print a test page.
macOS
The Terminal is the most reliable way. Copy the command shown on the source in the macOS tab; it looks like this:
lpadmin -p SealedPrint -E -v ipps://www.sealedprint.com:443/ipp/print/<token> -m everywhere
Or use System Settings:
- System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer, Scanner or Fax…
- Select the IP tab (globe icon).
- Enter the address
www.sealedprint.com:443, the protocol Internet Printing Protocol – IPP and the queue/ipp/print/<token>(the part of the URL after the host name). - Under "Use", select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint and click Add.
Linux
In the terminal (all distributions with CUPS 2.2 or later):
lpadmin -p SealedPrint -E -v ipps://www.sealedprint.com:443/ipp/print/<token> -m everywhere
Or graphically:
- GNOME: Settings → Printers → Add Printer and enter the address
ipps://www.sealedprint.com:443/ipp/print/<token>in the search field. - KDE: System Settings → Printers → Add → "Manual URI" with the same address.
- CUPS web interface (
http://localhost:631): Administration → Add Printer → "Internet Printing Protocol (ipps)", model "IPP Everywhere".
ChromeOS
- Settings → Advanced → Print and scan → Printers → Add printer.
- Select Add manually and enter a name.
- Enter the address
www.sealedprint.com:443, the protocol IPPS and the queue/ipp/print/<token>. - Click Add.
Every time
- Print from any program and choose the Sealed Print printer. Copies, two-sided printing, color, paper size and tray can be set in the print dialog as usual.
- Follow the job in the Queue. Options a printer cannot fulfil are adapted, for example two-sided to one-sided, and the change is shown on the delivery.
Troubleshooting
- The printer does not show up in the Windows list right away: close the Settings window and open it again.
- Printing reports an error: the inbound channel Printer URL (IPP) may be switched off, or the token was renewed. Check Settings → Inbound channels, and add the printer again with the current URL from the source.
- Wrong or missing options in the print dialog: the URL of a destination offers what this printer reports. If the printer reports something incorrectly, correct it with Capabilities → Correct in the row of the destination, then remove the printer on the computer and add it again, so the operating system reads the new options.
- The document is too large: the plan sets the maximum document size; see Plans and billing.
What's next
- Default destinations: decide where jobs from the default routing URL go.
- The queue and routing: preview, redirect and resend jobs.
