Connecting printers

Connect an INFRA printer

Printers with IPP INFRA support fetch their jobs from Sealed Print themselves, without a computer in between.

Some printers can connect to a print service in the cloud on their own. The standard for this is IPP INFRA (PWG 5100.18); printer menus also call it "Infrastructure Printer", "cloud" or "IPP proxy". Such a printer opens an outgoing connection to Sealed Print and fetches its jobs. No computer has to stay on, and documents stay within Sealed Print until they are printed.

Prerequisites

  • A printer with IPP INFRA support. Check the printer's manual or web interface for "IPP INFRA", "Infrastructure Printer" or a cloud print service where you can enter your own URI, user name and password.
  • An admin switches on the outbound channel INFRA printers once under Settings → Outbound channels.
  • Included in every plan. Any member can create an INFRA destination; it belongs to them.

One-time setup

1. Create the destination

  1. Go to Destinations → New destination → INFRA printer.
  2. Enter a name, for example "Office 2nd floor". The Identifier is filled in from the name; it appears in printer URLs and email addresses.
  3. Optionally switch on Share with all members, then select Create.

2. Enter the details in the printer

  1. In the row of the new destination, select Device setup.
  2. The dialog shows the Infrastructure printer URI, the User name and the Password.
  3. Open the printer's web interface or settings menu, find the Infrastructure Printer or cloud print settings, and enter these three values.

Treat the password like a key: anyone who knows it can fetch this destination's jobs.

When the printer connects, the destination shows Online and the printer reports its capabilities (paper sizes, trays, two-sided, color).

Every time

Nothing to do. Jobs to this destination wait until the printer fetches them; the printer reports when the job is printed, and the delivery timeline shows each step.

Troubleshooting

  • The destination stays "Offline": check the URI, user name and password in the printer, and that the printer can reach the internet. Some printers only connect after a restart.
  • The password was passed on or lost: select Device setup → Renew password and enter the new password in the printer. Until you do, the printer cannot fetch jobs.
  • New jobs are not delivered: an admin may have switched off the outbound channel INFRA printers. Existing destinations stay, but no new jobs are routed to them until it is switched on again.
  • Capabilities are wrong: select Capabilities → Correct on the destination to fix what the printer reports incorrectly.
